Largs is situated in North Ayrshire. It is located about 53 kilometers from Glasgow. The popular seaside resort features a pier and offers numerous attractions and events for visitors to enjoy, including an annual festival that celebrates the town's Viking influence. Sights of interest in the local area include Skelmorlie Aisle and Kelburn Castle, which is thought to be the oldest castle in Scotland that has been inhabited continuously by the same family. Largs is rich with history linked to the Vikings, complete with an annual festival taking place each September. Many of the signs up today still read in Scots Gaelic. The town gained popularity toward the end of the 1800s with the building of large hotels, the pier, and a connection on the railway. Soon after many large, mansions were constructed in the town drawing in even more tourists and residence alike.
There are many interesting things to see and do in Largs. Viking Centre at Barrfields, takes a close and interactive glance into the Viking's life and history. Neolithic tomb is located behind Douglas Park and dates back to 3000 to 2000 BC. Kelburn Castle, which is thought to be the oldest castle in Scotland, has stayed in the same family since the early 1100s. Skelmore Aisle, and the adjoining museum, is what remain of a church that once stood there; you can visit the mausoleum and monument that are the only buildings which remain.
Besides the history and buildings, there are plenty of other things to do. Largs offers theatres, a swimming pool, parks, the Kelburn Country Center, and Inverclyde National Sports Training Centre. One of the most famous tourist, and local, attractions is Nardinis. Nardinis is an ice cream parlor, cafe, and restaurant that expand along the boardwalk. Largs is easily accessible by railway or by ferry service, so making a stop into the town along the way should be no trouble to you and well worth it in the end.
