The town can be reached via a ferry from Wemyss Bay. Visitors will find Rothesay Castle at the centre of the town, although much of it now lies in ruins. The castle dates back to the 13th Century. Visitors will certainly want to visit Winter Gardens while in town as well as the pavilion that dates back to 1938 and is located on the seafront.
Rothesay is a Scottish town and it is the main town on the area that is known as the Isle of Bute. The Isle of Bute is located within the local council area that is known as Argyll and Bute. The Isle of Bute can be reached using the regular ferry network from the mainland town of Wemyss Bay and the ferry sails directly into the town of Rothesay. There is a main railway line that between Glasgow and Wemyss Bay and the train station in Wemyss Bay is next to the ferry terminal. The heart of the town is the location for the ruins of Rothesay Castle and this castle dates back to the thirteenth century. Rothesay Castle was unique within Scotland as it was the only circular castle. The town of Rothesay has a population of about six thousand.
The town of Rothesay was the former county town for the county that was known as Buteshire. The former county of Buteshire also included places such as Little Cumbrae, Arran and Great Cumbrae.
One of the most successful sports clubs on the Island is the Shinty Club and this club plays matches at one of the highest levels within the sport of Shinty. Bute Shinty Club plays within the Premier League that is sponsored by Marine Harvest. The local team won the league in 2006 and they were promoted to the Premier League. The town of Rothesay also hosts an amateur football team for seniors that are known as Rothesay Brandane Football Club and they play within the football league that is known as Caledonian Amateur. There is also a football team for the children that are under fifteen year olds and this team is known as Brandane Rovers and they compete within the Youth League of Paisley and District.
